In 2020, after some encouragement from friends, I started cycling later in life at the age of 46. After a few rides, I gained experience and soon developed the cycling bug. By summer 2023, I completed my first century sportive in a pair of trainers, as I was still not comfortable with cleats. Soon after, cycling had become my primary form of exercise. But without any structure.

This snapshot is just to add some context. As I approached 50, I made a promise to myself to improve my overall fitness and cycling ability. I broadcast my ambition to complete the Marmotte Gran Fondo in the French Alps in 2025 but I knew to achieve this challenge, I needed help in terms of a game plan and direction.

I had no idea who to turn to and trust with so many differing options and opinions displayed on the social media platforms. I knew I had to pick one person and block out other noise and distractions.

Simon, as a coach greatly appealed to me, as he leads by example. He is a mentor who is doing great challenges himself. His endurance feats are inspirational. After an email to Velo Performance, a friendly return call, away we went. From the start, Simon provided great insight into all things cycling that included nutrition, recovery, mindset and strength training.

As I progressed in the plan my mindset developed into general overall health and wellbeing. Yes, I was training for an event, but the journey was enjoyable, informative and my focus also became more toward life into my older years and keeping healthy. I liked the information provided, which taught me valuable knowledge on how to stay strong with age. I gained a wealth of solid data, not just uploaded training rides on a Garmin device. Simon was able to review my key rides, discuss performance and adjust where needed.

Having a personalised plan, especially through the winter months, removed the guesswork and kept me committed through both indoor and outdoor ride options. When spring came around, I was in a good place for my chosen events and much fitter for more enjoyable summer riding. A training setback here and there is inevitable, but the plan just gets modified and makes it easier to carry on. Simon is straightforward and a great communicator.

I’m delighted to report that my cycling and health targets for my 50th year have been accomplished, Marmotte Gran Fondo ✔️
